Frequently Asked Questions

  • Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes that allows the employer to develop the apprentice’s skills and knowledge around the specific sector. Apprenticeships are part funded through the Education and Skills Funding Agency.  

    All apprentices must have a valid contract of employment. Employers must allow 20% Off Job Training for all apprenticeships from 1st May 2017.

  • Although there is no set wage for an apprentice we encourage employers to pay above the apprentice rate.


  • Apprentices must be on programme for a minimum of 372 days, some higher-level apprenticeships can take up to two or three years, depending on the specialism. 

  • All apprentices will gain a competence and knowledge-based diploma. In addition, apprentices will gain functional skills level 2 qualifications in English, Maths and ICT. Workbooks are provided for apprentices for Employer Right and Responsibilities.

  • Employers are divided into Levy and Non-Levy employers – if you are a levy employer all training costs are met through your digital account. If you are a non-levy employer, then the cost is met through co-investment with the employer contributing 10% of the overall costs and the government contributing 90%.

  • All employers taking on an apprentice aged between 16-18 years are eligible for an employer incentive of £1000. This is paid direct to the employer. The first payment will be made available 90 days after the apprentice start date and the second payment after 365 days on programme. 

    All incentives are conditional on the apprentice remaining in learning and in employment throughout the course of the programme.
